Vitamins and minerals for health
and vitality – throughout
life.
The importance of vitamins and minerals
to health, fitness and vitality is undisputed. A sufficient
intake helps us to
look good, feel good and enjoy life to the full – whatever
our age! It is recommended that we eat at least five portions
of fruit and vegetables each day in order to achieve an optimal
intake of vitamins and minerals. However, a supplement may
also help to safeguard your dietary intake.
Vitamin A – essential for healthy eyes, skin and growth.
Also an important antioxidant and immune system component.
Biotin – takes part in the metabolism of protein, fats
and carbohydrates and plays a helping role in the production
of antibodies.
Thiamin (Vitamin B1) – helps to produce energy from food
and is involved in maintaining the nervous and digestive system.
Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) – required
for energy release from food and plays a role in the production
and repair of body
tissues and the formation of antibodies.
Niacin – required for
energy production from food, brain function and healthy skin.
Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) – involved in energy production
and fat metabolism. Helps maintain healthy skin and hair. Essential
for brain and nerve functioning. Involved in the manufacture
of steroids.
Vitamin B6 – helps to maintain healthy skin, nerves and
muscles. Assists in the production of antibodies and hormones.
Folacin (Folic Acid) – essential
for red blood cell production, new cell growth, early development
of the brain, nerves and
energy production.
Vitamin B12 – essential for the formation of red blood
cells and to maintain a healthy nervous system.
Vitamin C – an important antioxidant vitamin that supports
the body’s immune system. Vital for iron absorption and
plays a role in the maintenance of healthy gums, teeth, skin
and blood vessels.
Vitamin D – required for calcium absorption, so essential
for strong bones and teeth and the optimal functioning of muscles
and nerves.
Vitamin E – an important antioxidant that protects tissue
cells and helps maintain healthy skin. It also helps the body
to use oxygen and exerts a beneficial effect on the blood and
blood vessels.
Calcium – essential for the normal growth and the functioning
of bones, teeth, nerves and muscles. Other important roles
include hormone production, Vitamin B12 absorption and the
regulation of fluid balance, blood coagulation and heart activity.
Magnesium – found in the bones and muscles, cells and
soft tissues. Magnesium is vital for cell formation, energy
metabolism, the regulation of calcium metabolism, the absorption
of Vitamin B6 and for the proper functioning of nerves and
muscles. It activates and regulates about 300 enzymes and is
necessary for heart function and circulation as well as being
involved in blood pressure.
Iron – is essential for oxygen uptake and energy release
from food and to help support the body’s immune system.
The body cannot manufacture iron, so its entire supply must
come from the diet.
Zinc – an important mineral for health. Over 75% of zinc
is concentrated in the bones, muscles and skin. It is vital
for the functioning of about 200 enzymes, and is involved in
mechanisms concerning the formation of bone tissue, tissue
repair, insulin production, carbohydrate metabolism, and the
immune system.
